“HORSES”

Poem by: Despoina

Horses,
Marching slowly, with that certain, proud tone in their
Look

Horses,
Smelling the springtime breeze that joyfully caresses
their shiny mane

Horses,
Always looking forward, because they have nowhere
Else to look

Horses,
Cantering, in the full blooming poppy meadow,
as they fall in love

Horses,
Running, always looking forward, because they have
nowhere else to look

Horses,
Hiding in the dense, wild forest, drinking from the
gurgling water of the wise river

Horses,
Having unprejudiced spirits, determined to love
wholeheartedly; devoted to their rider

Horses,
Galloping, always looking forward, because they have
nowhere else to look

Horses,
Running frenetically, trying to escape from fear and
grief, from pain and prejudice

Horses,
When the arrow of an inequitable love pierces their
tender heart, they pause

Horses,
Standing at the edge, looking always forward, because
they have nowhere else to look

Horses,
Admiring, only for one moment, the vermilion horizon,
Because they have nowhere else to look

Horses,
Lifted upright, in their two front legs, they neigh

Horses,
Brave and fearless
Then, they jump into the cliff
for there isn’t any other blooming meadow where
Horses would wish to be

  1. this makes for some beautiful visuals...we have multiple horse farms around our house...they are so majestic, just watching the frolic...and i love the word vermilion...

  3. I like the repetition of the word horses, like a litany from a secret prayer. You capture the horse spirit and thru the many permutations you fill out aspects of this being who has shared with humans so much history.
